Did you rearrange the words you chose? I am very curious to find out more about variations and "rules" for found poems. This is so moving. It makes me want to know more about this little girl. I have questions. Really beautiful. I am looking forward to this year's blog, and will await your return. Maybe I can come over in May.....things are ok in our world. I will share some day. Like the pervading flavor of a pungent spice, poetry makes everything better. At least to me.
I have so much to share from IRA. You will get some tips from me soon. Regie Routman was fantastic. I found out some new and very interesting ideas. One in particular uses a structured intervention using art and visual thinking before writing. The work is breath-taking. However it works for all kids and I think defintely something to look into. The strong research results are absolutely amazing. It is the work of Beth Olshansky from U NH. I am sold!!
Kelly Gallagher was good on mentor texts for HS kids and writing. Got to hear Marilyn Singer, Jane Yolen and J. Pat Lewis read poems and talk about poetry. Sylvia Vardell was a masterful emcee/moderator. I won the "big kahuna" doorprize, an autograhped copy of J. Pat and Jane's new poetry book. Not sure it is out for sale yet. I knew the names of the US Children's Poet Laureates. Only one at the Olio who did. So that was quite nice.
I will be checking in to see what you may be up to next. I hope you will keep on writing poems!! Maybe you should try Amy's Poetry Hike. Who says poetry deserves only one month?
Janet F.skanny17https://www.blogger.com/profile/07488350213473016250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-76264745826158988182012-04-30T18:33:40.208-07:002012-04-30T18:33:40.208-07:00What a perfect image. Lucky me I got a room on a high floor with a beautiful view of Chicago sights like Lake Michigan to start and Grant Park and the pier all lit up at night. Makes me think of summer and carnivals even though it is nippy here, too. Did you have snow on the ground this morning? I think I should try a list poem tomorrow. I wrote a poem in the airport and found a nice poem in the on-board AA magazine. Someone wrote a comment saying they needed to have more poetry in the magazine!!! So we should help them out. If I was still teaching I would be writing a poem of joy and celebration that the testing is done!!!
I am going to miss your poems in May.skanny17https://www.blogger.com/profile/07488350213473016250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-25903086520221749242012-04-26T06:46:07.923-07:002012-04-26T06:46:07.923-07:00Melinda, I *heart* "What's in Your Pocket...Melinda, I *heart* "What's in Your Pocket." I love ...Love That Dog is one of my favorite books. I love how the boy, Jack, changes over time. I also love how his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, never gives up. I mean in the beginning Jack does not believe boys write poetry! Never heard of this poetry generator site and will check it out. Camels and water and daughter. Very interesting composition. I think it is challenging to write a version of this poem. My kids have tried and it is not easy so bravo, again, to you, Mrs. Harvey from your number 1 fan!!! I imagine you must be a lot like Mrs. S. yourself. I wish I could write like Sharon Creech!!! And I wish I could have a kid write so passionately they could convince an author to come for a visit to the school. Now that would be cool! I am going to meet Allan Wolf at IRA. I wish I knew what other MM Poetry people are going to be there. There is a poetry event called an Olio at night. He will be at that, though I am not sure what Olio actually means. However with poetry, who cares!! Allan will be signing at his publishers so I will get a copy of Titanic for sure. April Wayland will be there, too. She sounds like someone I would love to get to know. She is on the Six authors who write blog. I will keep you posted.skanny17https://www.blogger.com/profile/07488350213473016250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-58132644810844372322012-04-24T15:27:40.716-07:002012-04-24T15:27:40.716-07:00I really love the whole idea of a Lento. How cool ...I really love the whole idea of a Lento. How cool you found another new form! I love your first stanza's beginning words. Plus I really like the entire first stanza a lot and your second is good, too. My only thought is to maybe work for a different last line. I only mention this since you said it was not your "love". I do believe it works nicely though and teaches both about science and the Lento!
Have you heard of goodbye poems that Kali Dakos talks about? Now I don't think it is a specific form with a pattern so may not be something you want to work on, but I was at a workshop she did with kids when she visited a school and she talked about the importance of saying goodbye in a tangible way ie a poem. One of my 3rd graders tried it and he actually ended up standing with his uncle who read it at the funeral of my student's great grandma. It was a loving attempt by an 8 year old and touched his family. So that's my two cents for the Lento and another possible poem. Maybe you could write to say goodbye to snow for the spring!! If it worked you would surely get many new fans!!!!skanny17https://www.blogger.com/profile/07488350213473016250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-2082857730864550402012-04-23T12:40:57.527-07:002012-04-23T12:40:57.527-07:00Wow...a lento! Love weathering/feathering. As for reversos...they are so crazy, aren't they? I tried one once, but it didn't read backward the right way. Maybe someday again... a.Amy LVhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16625469276544426664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-17986023007055623172012-04-23T07:21:53.418-07:002012-04-23T07:21:53.418-07:00A bright spot in the midst of dreary snow. There a...A bright spot in the midst of dreary snow. There are snow days galore around these CNY parts. I love your reverso! I never heard "put your white crayons away" before. Now that could be a poem idea. Find all the variations on actions to try for a snow day. The kids would know a bunch and it would be fun to collect them from around the snowy areas! By the way I think your idea would work in with CCSS in terms of opinion and argument. I have spent all weekend reading CCSS and wonder if you have read the Appendices A and B. They are very interesting and helpful. Also check out the standards in Haiku on Burkin and Yaris website. Hope you got a snow day so you can write more poems!! I love how you wrote as a penny; ideas are everywhere. I also liked how you shared your notebook jots! Today I shared Laura Shovan's notebook and her "In Early Spring" poem that Amy LV pointed us to yesterday. The 3rd graders were very into seeing the notebook photos and how the poem evolved. Hope you saw that yesterday. Off to try to compose a 15 or less word poem. It looks hard to me!! Are you really posting at 3am? A truly dedicated poet and poetry teacher, Mrs. Harvey! BTW, I liked thinking about the penny's travels from bank to mall to hole with a pocket in it, maybe "they" need to replace those pennies with a poem! Now that's probably the real treasure, at least for us poetry-lovers!skanny17https://www.blogger.com/profile/07488350213473016250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1090793750354303925.post-74895415654784748872012-04-19T12:33:10.454-07:002012-04-19T12:33:10.454-07:00David, I love that you got in the spirit of senry...David, I love that you got in the spirit of senryu!
